Wood Whittling

6-Week Hands-On Carving Class

Introduce your child to the art of wood whittling in this beginner-friendly course designed for ages 8 and up. Students learn how to safely use carving tools, understand different types of wood, and practice simple carving techniques while creating their own wooden projects.

📍 Location: 14070 Portico Blvd, Fort Myers, FL
🗓 Days: Thursdays | January 15 – February 19
⏰ Times: 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
🎓 Ages: 8+
💲 Tuition: $300 per student (6-week session, includes all materials)

Each 90-minute session blends safety, guided instruction, and creative freedom. Students start with soap and soft woods to build confidence, then move into shaping real projects as their skills grow. By the end of the course, students will take home several finished pieces and a strong foundation in craftsmanship.

What Students Will Do

  • Learn safe tool handling and carving basics

  • Explore soft woods and how they behave

  • Practice the main whittling cuts

  • Create projects like small animals, utensils, and a personal wand

  • Learn how to sand, smooth, and finish wood with natural oils or beeswax

 

Weekly Highlights

  • Week 1: Safety, tools, and beginner practice

  • Week 2: Basic carving cuts and pattern practice

  • Week 3: Carving simple shapes (fish, bird, leaf, etc.)

  • Week 4: Functional carving — butter spreader or spoon

  • Week 5: Design and begin carving a custom “magic wand”

  • Week 6: Finish projects, apply natural finishes, and showcase their work

 

Skills Gained

  • Safe and confident use of carving tools

  • Understanding of wood types and grain

  • Ability to carve basic shapes and simple functional items

  • Increased patience, focus, and fine motor strength

 

Materials Provided

All tools, safety gear, wood, and finishing supplies are included.
