Woodworking
Join us for hands-on woodworking classes designed to equip students with
practical skills, confidence using tools, and pride in creating something with
their own hands. Each student will complete three unique projects per session
and will be provided their own set of tools to use in class.
Our woodworking program follows a progressive pathway:
• Beginner Woodworking (July Session)
• Intermediate Woodworking (September Session)
• Advanced Woodworking (Future Sessions)
Each level introduces new skills, tools, and project challenges while building
upon previously learned techniques.
BEGINNER WOODWORKING
The Beginner Woodworking Series is designed for students with little to no woodworking experience. Safety serves as the foundation for every project as students learn to confidently use basic woodworking tools and develop essential shop skills.
Projects are intentionally designed around the tool or skill being introduced, allowing students to gain hands-on experience while creating projects they can proudly take home.
Students will learn:
• Workshop safety and tool handling
• Proper use of a tape measure and speed square
• Safe use of a handsaw
• Sanding techniques using sanding blocks and belt sanders
• Hammer and nail skills
• Drilling and fastening techniques
• Wood staining and finishing
• Following basic project plans
No prior woodworking experience is required.
INTERMEDIATE WOODWORKING
Prerequisite: Completion of the Beginner Woodworking Series or instructor approval.
The Intermediate Woodworking Series introduces students to additional power tools while encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and greater independence in the workshop.
Rather than every student creating identical projects, students will learn a specific woodworking skill each week and then apply that skill through their own unique designs. Creativity is encouraged while still teaching students to follow project plans, measurements, and construction requirements.
For example, during derby car week, students will build from the same approved plan but will have the freedom to customize, decorate, and design their project to reflect their own creativity and style.
Students will learn:
• Safe operation of additional power tools
• How to follow more detailed project plans
• Ways to develop creativity within structured builds
• Measuring and layout techniques for greater accuracy
• Problem-solving skills through hands-on projects
• Confidence and independence in the shop environment
• How to create projects that showcase craftsmanship and personal creativity
ADVANCED WOODWORKING
Prerequisite: Completion of the Intermediate Woodworking Series or instructor approval.
This advanced level deepens students’ woodworking abilities with more complex projects and increased independence. Teens will learn precise measurement, project planning, advanced hand tool skills, and safe operation of additional power tools under close supervision. Emphasis is placed on craftsmanship, problem-solving, and confidence with real-world woodworking techniques.
