Jr. Mariners: Maritime Skills + Seamanship
A 6-Week Maritime Skills Course
Offered through The Homeschool Hangar, Jr. Mariners introduces students ages 8+ to the fundamentals of seamanship through hands-on maritime training and real-world problem solving. Throughout the six-week course, students explore the skills used by professional mariners while building confidence, teamwork, and water safety awareness.
Students will learn practical maritime skills including knot tying, navigation and chart reading, radio communication, anchoring concepts, boat operation basics, and crew coordination. Each class combines instruction, rotating skill stations, and scenario-based challenges that encourage students to think and respond like a real vessel crew.
Learners will keep a Mariner Logbook where they track skills, reflect on lessons, and document their growing knowledge of maritime safety and navigation. The course also introduces students to maritime careers such as charter captains, marine researchers, harbor pilots, and Coast Guard service.
